Here is what we are learning in...

Reading: Last week we reviewed cause and effect by reading a story called, Wild Horses. Students learned about the effects of the overpopulation of horses and how a horse sanctuary in South Dakota helped with the problem. We will continue to review cause and effect this week. Students will read "just right" books and show understanding of previously taught focus skills by creating a story cube. Next week, we will began a new class novel called, Because of Winn Dixie. Students are required to read a minimum of 20 minutes a night as well as use the worksheets provided to work on the weekly focus skills.

Writing: Students have learned three strategies for generating personal narrative writing. They wrote about a special person, place, and an object that sparked an important memory. They will select one of these drafts and publish it. In this process, we will focus on leads, snapshots and conclusions. Spelling and grammar will continue to alternate weeks. Each week, homework is given to help rehearse a new skill that will be tested on Friday.

Math: Student took a test over Topic 2 (number sense with addition and subtraction) last Friday. This week we will begin Topic 3 on multiplication and division. Please have your child practice their multiplication and division facts 5 minutes a night. Check out the Websites page for a list of good practice links.

Social Studies: Our trip to the capitol was a huge success. Thank you volunteers! Be sure to check out the newly posted photos. Last Friday, students began to work in teams on the "Big Person" project. They will research and write about a prominent figure in the US and Texas government. Students will also work on reviewing for the test over Chapter 11 this week. A review sheet will go home and they will also have some time to study in class.

Science: We are continuing our unit on matter. Students are investigating different types of mixtures and solutions. Ask your child these essential questions: What is the "rule" for determining whether something is considered matter? What are some of the properties of matter? What are the 4 states of matter we have learned about so far? Do they know a fifth state? What is the difference between a mixture and a solution? What are examples of each?

Thanks for visiting!
